Kannada or Devanagari? The dialect-rich Konkani sets off furious debate between Sahitya Academy & Konknnis

Politically powerful Devanagari lobbyists have argued that the Central Sahitya Akademi has only recognised Konkani written in Devanagari.

Though Konkani is written in 5 different scripts, namely – Kannada, Roman, Devanagari, Perso-Arabic and Malayalam – the Sahitya Akademi (Central), since the very beginning, has been awarding Awards, Assignments and Projects only to the literature in the Devanagari script.   Despite the fact that Devanagari is only the 3rdmost prolific script (after Kannada and Roman), the Akademi has been squarely ignoring and neglecting Konkani literature in other scripts.  When innumerable pleas and countless representations against this gross injustice evoked no positive response, Eric Ozario and 2 others (Vally Vagga, Mysore and Marcel D’souza, Mangalore ), on behalf of all Konkanis, have approached the honourable High Court of Karnataka, with a Writ Petition – WP. No. 35120/2011(GM-PIL) dated 8-9-2011.

The Writ Petition prays the High Court – ‘to issue a direction to the Sahitya Akademi, Respondent no. 1 herein, to recognize all the 5 scripts of Konkani Language viz., Kannada, Roman (English), Devanagari, Arabic and Malayalam as eligible for grant of Awards, Research funding and all other incidental works, for which assistance is rendered by the Akademi’.

While the High Court is considering this Petition, the ‘Karnataka State Konkani Linguistic Minorities Institutions’ have filed an application to implead them in the case and have pleaded to consider ‘only Devanagari for recognition’.  Together, they have issued a Press Statement (published on l2-6-2012) with false information.

Their statement claims that –

1.      ‘Devanagari is the official script of Konkani’.

2.      ‘The Constitution has given prominence to the Devanagari script’.

3.      ‘Konkanis use only the Devanagari script and not Kannada or Malayalam’.

4.      ‘If any script other than Devanagari is recognized, it will be detrimental to Konkani Langauage’.

Jagotik Konkani Songhotton (JKS) condemns these statements and wishes to expose the truth –

 Official Script –

(i)                  Who decides which is the official script of a language?  Does Devanagari become the official script, just because the Devanagari lobby declares so?  Such a decision has to be taken in a democratic process, at an assembly of representatives of all scripts.  Such an assembly has never been convened in Konkani.

(ii)                Moreover, this is not a question of the ‘Official script’. The Question is whether the Sahitya Akademi’s mandate is to honour and support the ‘literature’ of a language or the ‘script’ of a language.  If it is literature, then how can the Akademi pamper and patronize the literature in one script alone and completely ignore and disregard the literature in other scripts?

‘The Constitution has given prominence to the Devanagari script’ – totally untrue.  Articles 14 and  29 of the Constitution of India read as follows -

(i)                              Article 14 – Equality before law – “the state shall not deny to any person equality before law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India”.

(ii)                            Article 29 – Protection of interests of minorities – 1. ‘Any section of the citizen residing in the territory of India or any part thereof having a distinct language, script or culture of its own, shall have the right to conserve the same’

a.                   The Constitution of the Sahitya Akademi is very clear as to the script issue – the Constitution of the Sahitya Akademi – clause 3, sub clause 9 (a) ‘To improve and develop the various scripts in which the languages of the country are written’.

b.                  Not only that, in its reply to our Petition the Sahitya Akademi has admitted to the honourable High Court that – ‘ The mandate of the Sahitya Akademi is – fully to recognize and support the literary traditions of the given language”.  The literary traditions of Konkani being that it is in 5 scripts, the Sahitya Akademi has no option but to recognize and support literature in all 5 scripts of Konkani.

‘Konkanis use only the Devanagari script and not Kannada or Malayalam’.  This is the pinnacle of falsehood.  The truth is – According to the2001 Census, of the total Konkanis in India, 31.82% Konkanis live in Goa. 31.73% live in Karnataka.  All Konkanis living in Karnataka read and write Konkani in the Kannada script Goa is divided between Roman and Devanagari.  A Study conducted in 2011 reveals that only 12.7%Konkanis in India use Devanagari script; the remaining 87.3% use other scripts.  The use of Kannada script is the highest – 58%.

‘If any script other than Devanagari is recognized, it will be detrimental to Konkani language’. Our Response –

(i)                  Our fight is not against Devanagari.  We are not demanding that Devanagari be neglected.  Our demand is that the other 4 scripts also be considered, along with Devanagari.

(ii)                Their attempt is to destroy all script variety in Konkani and impose their variety on everyone.  This is detrimental to the unity and development of Konkani.  We condemn this and seek legal remedies.

Variety in Konkani is not in script alone. There is plenty of variety in dialect, religion, caste, traditions, customs, practices, folk-arts, cuisine, costumes, festivals, rituals etc. etc..  In the midst of so much variety to seek unity by destroying these varieties and by imposing one’s variety on all, is utter folly. ‘Unity in diversity’ is the mantra of our nation’s unity.  ‘Unity in diversity’ is also the formula for Konkani unity and future.

LOVE JIHAD: Conversion By Fake Love

 Dr Radhasyam Brahmachari

This author has tried to expose how the Muslim boys and men reportedly target school and college girls belonging to non-Muslim communities for conversion to Islam by feigning love, called “Love-Jihad”, mainly in the southern Indian state of Kerala and the adjoining state of Karnataka. It has also been mentioned that in October 2009, the Karnataka government announced its intentions to counter Love- Jihad, which “appeared to be a serious issue”. A week after the announcement, the government ordered a probe into the situation by the Crime Branch CID to determine if an organised effort existed to convert these girls and, if so, by whom it was being funded.  A similar investigation undertaken by the Kerala government revealed a shocking picture of thousands of Hindu and Christian girls falling into the trap of Love- Jihad by the Muslim young men . The numbers, from 2006 till 2009, of such Love- Jihad conversions on a district basis in Kerala is staggering. Below is a table giving the data, district wise, in Kerala with total incidents, cases registered, and those brought back with the help of various institutions and friends.

Table-1

Sr No. Name of the discrits No of Incidents Cases Registered Rescued
1 Thiruvananthapuram 216 26 6
2 Kollam 98 34 7
3 Alappuzha 78 22 6
4 Pathanamthitta 87 36 11
5 Idukki 156 18 9
6 Kottayam 116 46 13
7 Ernakulam 228 52 26
8 Trissur 102 41 19
9 Palakkad 111 19 9
10 Malappuram 412 88 31
11 Kojhikode 364 92 29
12 Kannur 312 106 27
13 Kasargode 586 123 68

The table shows that the number of girls converted in this way was 2876. But only 705 cases were registered. Kasargod tops the list of Jihadi conversions with a figure of 568. Only 123 incidents have been registered with the police.  Central investigation agencies have received information that 4000 such girls all over India who have been converted under Love-Jihad are being trained for Jihadi activities by Pakistan-based terrorist organizations.  Official statistics say that about 8 girls are reported missing under suspicious circumstances everyday in Kerala and this is the reason for their growing anxiety and fear of the parents of those girls.  Based on the statistics of the Crime Record Bureau of Kerala Police, Kochi’s National University of Advanced Legal Studies carried out a study in which it was found that the number of girls missing from Kerala was 2167 in 2007 and 2530 in 2008. Many believe that the actual number may be much higher than the numbers registered. The activities of Love Jihadis became more aggressive in Kerala in 2006. This led to the sudden increase in women and young girls disappearing from Kerala. According to Kerala Catholic Bishops Council, up to 4,500 girls in Kerala have been targeted, whereas Hindu Janajagriti Samiti claimed that 30,000 girls have been converted in Karnataka alone.Jihadi Romeos promise to marry unsuspecting young girls within 6 months if they convert to Islam and take and dump these girls in the conversion centers. These girls are subjected to various tortures for weeks in these conversion centers. There is information that these girls are shipped from the unmanned coasts of Kochi, Kozhikode, etc., to Mangalore, Goa, Chennai, Lakshadweep, from where they are taken abroad. Many of these girls are believed to be taken to the Gulf countries under the false pretence of a job and forced into prostitution once they reach there.

The Jihadi Romeos are given special ranks, rewards and money for carrying out their operation of trapping more and more unsuspecting girls into love snare. Jahangir Razak, a former student of Kozhikode Law College, one such Jihadi Romeo, is said to have trapped 42 girls till date. He is reportedly the link between a sex racket running in Chennai and terrorist organizations. One Shajahan from Pathanamthitta has trapped 6 young girls from Malayalappuzha Panchayat itself.

It may be mentioned here that during the days of monarchy, the Muslims could turn a kafir country (dar-ul-harb) into a Muslim country (dar-ul-Islam) only by military conquest. But today’s democracy has opened an easy path to them and that is by increasing their kind by procreating more children as used by the Prophet Muhammad in Medina, nearly 1400 years ago. In this demographic war, Muslim womb has emerged as the most powerful weapon. So, conversion of a non-Muslim woman into Islam simply means the conversion of a non-Muslim womb into a Muslim womb and giving birth to more jihadis. So, in a nutshell, the Love- Jihad campaign is an Islamic plan to trap Hindu and non-Muslim girls into fake love, compel them to accept Islam and use them as the instruments for bearing Muslim offspring.

The ultimate goal of Islam is to turn the entire world into a dar-ul-Islam and this goal is to be reached by converting each and every dar-ul-harb into a dar-ul-Islam. As mentioned above, a dar-ul-harb, in the present democratic setup, could be turned into a dar-ul-Islam by altering the demographic pattern or over populating the native population by Muslim population. This should be done as fast as possible, and their lies the need for converting non-Muslim wombs into Muslim wombs. The process has two pronged benefits. Firstly, it helps to swell Muslim population fast and secondly, it cripples the population growth of the non-Muslims native population.

The Modus-operandi of Love Jihad plan:

Recently the said Hindu Janajagriti Samiti has published a booklet, LOVE JIHAD, written by Ramesh Hanumant Shinde and Mohan Ajju Gowda and in that booklet, the authors have discussed the entire process how the Love Jihad agenda are being operated. At the very outset, it should be mentioned that the Muslim organizations operating in India receive huge money from Gulf countries to run the Love Jihad campaign. The Muslim Romeos are heavily rewarded for successfully seducing and converting non-Muslim girls into Islam.

The Muslim Romeos engaged in Love Jihad, earn Rs 200/- per day for their service to Islam. Influential Muslim clerics of Sambhajinagar, Aurangabad, Maharastra, have issued a fatwa that every Muslim youth, who is trying to trap Hindu or non-Muslim girls into Love-Jihad and converting them to Islam, would be awarded Rs 200/- per day. When such a girl is seduced, the youth is given a two wheeler and when he marries that seduced girl, he is given Rs 100,000 to Rs 200,000. A Muslim organization, named Muslim Youth Forum, has classified Hindu girls, and Muslim boy who lures a Hindu girl to marry him, is handsomely rewarded. The table 2 (below) shows the classification and the reward.

Table 2

Caste/Region of the girls lured into fake love affair Reward
1.  Sikh girls Rs 700,000
2.  Punjabi Hindu girls Rs 600,000
3.  Gujarati Brahmin girls Rs 600,000
4  Brahmin girls Rs 500,000
5  Kshatriya girls Rs 450,000
6  Gujarati girls of Kutch Rs 300,000
7  Jain / Marwari girls Rs 300,000
8  Backward caste / tribe girls Rs 200,000
9  Buddhist girls Rs 150,000

Above Table apparently shows that the task of converting a Sikh girl is hardest while it is easiest for a Buddhist girl. As mentioned above, the Love-Jihad campaign is funded by the Arab countries. A Saudi Arabia based organization, under the name of Indian Fraternity Forum, collects money for this purpose. The money is then transferred to India through hawala transaction.

The Hindu girls, who have migrated to the city from villages, are found to be easy prey. These poor girls normally do not have enough money to buy costly dresses to match the city life. “These girls are specifically targeted and given money. They are also lured into addictions like smoking and drinking alcohol etc. These girls, who are ensnared in Love-Jihad, become helpless and soon begin to  assist in ensnaring other Hindu girls”, the authors say.

The methods of luring Hindu girls:

The most common method of luring Hindu girls from schools and colleges is to loiter in around schools and colleges on two wheelers. As mentioned above, Jahangir Razzak, a student of Kozhikode Law College, has managed to lure 42 Hindu girls using this method.

The mobile phone has emerged as the most useful tool for the Love Jihadis. It is used for luring school and college going girls, and also for working women. The Muslim boys collect the mobile phone numbers of young Hindu and non-Muslim girls from Muslim mobile phone operators. Once a Muslim boy managed to get the mobile phone number of a Hindu girl, he starts sending SMS on her mobile phone and contacts her at night. In many cases, Muslim girls also play their part in Love-Jihad and introduce the Hindu girls to Muslim boys and to procure their mobile phone numbers.

During this preliminary stage, Muslim boys adopt Hindu names and Hindu etiquettes. They also gift mobile phones to Hindu girls who cannot afford it. In this context, Ms Leela Menon, the editor of the Malayalam daily Janmabhumi, says, “While personally visiting the houses of the girls who committed suicide due to Love Jihad, I found a common thing that, in all those cases the girls had received a mobile phone from their lovers. When I studied several such cases in Kerala as a journalist, I concluded that mobile phone is the single and most effective weapon of Love- Jihad”.

In Kerala, the birth place of Love Jihad in India, Christian girls are also being targeted by the Muslims. The Muslim Youth Forum has also declared a reward of Rs 400,000 for ensnaring and converting a Roman Catholic girl. The reward is Rs 300,000 for converting a Protestant girl. The Kerala Archbishop Council has taken the affaire of Love-Jihad very seriously. It has published guidelines to frustrate the attempts of the Love Jihadis to convert Christian girls.

Now a days, Internet is also being used on large scale to trap Hindu and non-Muslim girls. The Muslim thugs attempt to get closer and to develop friendship with Hindu girls through websites like Facebook or Orkut. They also take help of the matrimonial websites like Shadi.com or Jeevansathi.com to trap Hindu girls desirous of a marriage.

Muslim boys take up jobs in Hindu homes with the ulterior motive of ensnaring Hindu women in their love-dragnet. Hundreds of Hindu women have been defiled in Jaipur, Rajastan, with this trick.

Though Muslims, as a whole, lack in creative intelligence, they are super geniuses in planning evil and in conspiratorial or criminal plotting. This is reflected in inventing an ingenuous way to trap Hindu girls in the snare of Love-Jihad. Suppose a Hindu girl is passing through a lonely road and three or four Muslim boys indulge in eve-teasing. Then another Muslim boy, pretending to be an honest and virtuous non-Muslim, appears and rescues her.  Naturally, the girl develops an inclination to that boy, who utilizes this opportunity to get close to her, woo and seduce her. When the girl gets totally entrapped, he takes her to a mosque for converting her to Islam. In Ahmednagar (Maharastrs) alone, nearly 300 Hindu girls were entrapped and converted using this method.

Hindu Girls, who are given unlimited freedom by their parents, celebrate Valentine’s Day, Friendship Day and Rose Day etc. along with their friends as per the Western culture. The Muslim boys utilize these opportunities to get close to these girls. By continuous wooing, they gradually drag them in their love-dragnet. Many believe that some Muslim boys take the help of hypnotism to get hold of their prey. Professor Unnikrashnan, a Pharmacologist, believes that many Muslim boys use some special kind of drugs to turn them obedient to their seducers. These Muslim boys take the victims to some ice-cream parlours or juice centres owned by Muslims. There they add some kinds of seductive drugs to the drinks to be offered to the Hindu girls. These drugs meant for keeping the girls obedient to their seducers.

Application of Black-Magic or Vashikaran:

A Muslim organization, called Paigam Islam has released a fatwa asking Muslim boys to take the help of black magic (vashikaran) for entrapping the Hindu girls to their love drag-net. In fact, this Vashikaran is a Tantrik procedure that uses mantra (words), yantras (tools) and Bhasma (ash) and special kinds of medicines to bewitch, subjugate, attract, influence, allure, excite or entice the desired person. In fact, vashikaran refers to bringing a particular person under one’s complete control. Similarly, evil experiments like witchcraft, magic-spells, subtle attacks directed at a person etc. are known as black-magic. Muslim boys are believed to exercise all such practices to bring their targeted girls in their full control.

Behaviour of Hindu girls, who have undergone such spell of black-magic, alters considerably. To authenticate their claim, the authors of LOVE JIHAD have quoted the story of an educated Hindu girl Preeti, The story, given below, was narrated by Ms Arunatai Acharya of the Nari Raksha Manch, a satellite organization of Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

“A young girl, Preeti, from an immensely rich Rajasthani Hindu family, eloped with and married Abdul, a Muslim residing in a local slum. The police located her and took her to a remand home. However, it was difficult for the Police to keep her there for long as she was over 18 years of age and hence, legally a major. Therefore, her family members came to me with high hopes. On collecting full information about Abdul, it became clear that he was earning his bread by working as a coolie. The Police officials also came to know that Abdul had received Rs 50,000 for having ensnared Preeti in the love-dragnet. Then we chalked out a plan with Preeti’s family. According to that plan, as soon as she was released from the remand home, we took her to an unknown place.

Upon reunion with her family members, there was no visible guilt on her face. She kept addressing herself as ‘Ayesha, wife of Abdul. According to the plan, Preeti was told that if Abdul became a Hindu, her family would allow her to marry him. She then called up Abdul from her mobile phone and asked him to be a Hindu. But he categorically refused and, on the contrary, threatened her with talaq (divorce) in a forceful voice. Despite this insult, Preeti shouted at her mother in Urdu that she would go to her husband and stay with him in whatever state he kept her.

Preeti was an educated woman who spoke Hindi, here she was speaking like a traditional Muslim girl. Her attire too was Islamic. Realizing a sudden Islamic change in her, I consulted a renowned astrologer. After an astrological study, he concluded that Preeti was a victim of black-magic (or vashikaran). The next day he went to her house and recited some mantras for two hours. Using lemon and Vibhuti, a ritual of Utrara was also performed on her. That night she was able to sleep peacefully for the first time in many days. When she woke up the next morning, she asked her parents to forgive her. Presently, she is advising her friends also to be vigilant about Love-Jihad.”

Another similar story, narrated by Dr Mallika and Ms Sangeeta Sharma of Manahshakti Samupdeshan, Kerala, runs as follows:

“In Kottayam (Kerala), Manjumal, a young Hindu nurse was lured by a Muslim youth with his sweet talks on mobile phone, and later they began to roam together. Her family members opposed to her affair and in her presence warned the youth not to have any relationship with her. Despite this, she was hell-bent on marrying him. On further inquiry it was found that a person with that name did not exist at all. Besides this, his address was also found to be false.

Manjumal was not allowed to go outside the house for two months. She was also told that her lover was a fraudster and was counseled on the dangers of Love-Jihad. Despite these attempts, she was not ready to listen to her family. Several months have passed now but she is still adamant on marrying the Muslim man. It is possible that she was subjected to black magic or vashikaran.”

The readers may recall that this author has discussed a case of application of black-magic or vashikaran to ensnare a Hindu girl called Shivani Acharya by a Muslim mason, in the state of Orissa.

There are some remedies, the family members of a victim can use to neutralize the effect of black magic or vashikaran. (1) Chanting the name of the family Deity uninterruptedly while keeping one hand on the head of the victim. (2) Performance of utara on her, using a lemon and Vibhuti of a sattvik incense stick. (3) Reside at a jagrit place (A place where the presiding Deity is in awakened state) or in the Ashrama of a Saint, for some time.

Indian Media: The Great ‘Kannada” News Channel Circus

So  for  all those who still doubt whether there is space for one more news channel to make it 7 in all apart from the 11 general entertainment Kannada channels,  it is only a matter of time before they are able to get an fitting answer.  This debate has come to the fore with the recent addition of Public TV of former Kannada Prabha and Suvarna Channel’s News Editor H R Ranganth, to the existing stampede of channels.   With one more player in the market   the fight for the top slot in the small screen is going to generate more heat and the clamor for ‘breaking news’ is sure to witness a new high (or is it low?).  One-time firebrand journalist H R Ranganath being at the helm of affairs at Public TV has only added more nosiness and intensity to the existing fight for supremacy among channels for grabbing eyeballs.

Public TV which was went live on February 12, 2012 and 7 channels are now competing and combating with one another to climb to the top with ‘breaking news’ of every possible kind.  Public TV has become the 7th Kannada news channel of the state which will fight it out with Udaya News, T V 9 Karnataka, Suvarna News, Samaya, Kasturi and Janashree News channels, with each one trying new stratagem to garner public attention.

How these channels will conduct themselves in the course of next few years will be crucial.  In the entire fiasco the viewers will have no other option but to keep changing channels in their search for credible or unbiased channel for news and views.  Nevertheless, many regular viewers of the news channels in Karnataka have expressed their views openly in favour of one or other channels.

Suvarna News is the Best channel. TV9 is losing its scene in state..Kumaraswamy’s Kasturi news channel is used only to blame Congress and BJP..says Dinesh Poojary, Kundapura. Dinesh Rao from Mangalore is irritated about the influx of these channels. He says, ” Of course the number of Kannada news channels has increased over the years. But who cares about the quality? In the name of getting viewership all most all channels are reporting only cheap political, crime related or unnecessary items in the name of news. You must have seen many channels are thriving on murder, rape or accident stories…or even daily household quarrels which can happen at any time next to your door!! Also all most all channels use buffoon like specimens, who will be talking nothing other than nonsense! Why cannot these channels, if they do not have their originality just imitate English news channels like NDTV 24X7 or CNN-IBN? Can Burkha Dutt, Prannoy Roy, Vikram Chandra, Rajdeep Sardesai teach these something so called as… journalism??”

R. Bhandarkar from Mangalore opins that the craze for English in these Kannada channels are not lost. ‘Breaking News’, ‘BIG NEWS’, etc . etc. Many a times the ‘breaking news’are restraint drainers. ‘Break or be Broke’ seems to be the motto of these channels nowadays. These news contents in thses ‘breakers’ are often suicides, accidents, killings etc. These have no repititive values but are aired till one is disgusted. ‘BIG NEWS” does not even have that ‘little’ to make one sit up and watch. Many of the programmes, serials etc are ‘direct lifts’ from the more popular Hindi Counterparts. The less said of the ‘humour or comedy programmes’ the better!

“Some channels have alignment with political parties, some are pro congress and some are pro BJP and some are pro communists and some are pro communual. Some channels are there to make money and blackmail by sting operations. The journalistic ethics have been compromised…Forget about the regional channel, even the national and international channels are biased..God alone knows the truth. Anyway journalism has grown very well in India and would continue to grow. But they should work in the best interest of community, peace, nation, truth and act as bonding agent between different faiths and communities…should work as watch dog against social evil practices, alcoholism, corruption, female foeticide, dowry, caste system etc etc”, writes Shahnawaz Kukkikatte from Dubai.

Below are views from the cross section of society from Karnataka:

“i think TV9 is doing good job, many criminals and corrupt officer and politician behind the bar, because of TV9. for simple reason: one week i did not get this cannel i am watching other news channel but their communication is very poor. but TV9 is sound and communication very good. what ever it i like only channel u can give good report like corrupt officer, and corrupt politician. some channels don’t. have power to publish against corrupt politican and police dept. but Tv 9 not worried about all this thinks.”

“Suvarna 24×7 is the best channel, they caught porn MLA’s watching porn Video. TV nine is busy in film news n always busy in telecasting Bhootha n Pretha stories. Busy in slapping it’s on back. TV9 loosing it’s credit after Suvarna news came into  existence. Udaya news pro congres. Janashri pro BJP. Etv is neutral.”

“I have lot of respect towards H R Ranganath who have started Public Tv. I believe he will do justice for the same.I want all culprits to be exposed so that people can understand the double game of all politicians. Best of luck for u and ur future.”

“Most TV channals are behind TRP rating, & are craze with giving foolish news, highlighting rape stories, pralaya & exagarations, slapping their own back as top rated channels. All channels should learn ethics from basic & telecast with sense. The wrong news published or news published in wrong way will be watched by people across state. ‘Ethics first – Publicity last'”

“Tv9 started a very peculiar way of presenting news by pronouncing words split-in at unwanted places and ending sentences with an awkward style. Suvarna started well, but followed TV9 in style. Very irritating way of presentation. One lady news reader (Ms. Soumya?) has developed a peculiar style of ending sentences – very shrill ending deliberately developed(?)to look special???. pronounce the words as it is in its natural kannada way and make hearing the news pleasant. Too garish appearance by some of the anchors is not appreciable.”

“Looks like most of the news channel are funded by political party. New Entry is Public TV looks to be unbaised and appreciate the effort of Ranganath owner. He has a very good knack in explaining in details about any news which attracts. Lets see how Public TV future goes without support of Politicians……..”

South Indian Media: Why is Sankeshwar interested in Media?

Mahesh Kulkarni writes in an article Sankeshwar to ‘disrupt’ Kannada papers, again in Business Standard

Vijay Sankeshwar is addicted to shaking things up. A decade after this businessman and politician from Gadag district in North Karnataka revolutionised the Kannada newspaper industry by launching Vijaya Karnataka, a paper that quickly outstripped the then market leader Praja Vani, he is doing it all over again.

Why is Sankeshwar so interested in the newspaper world? The roots of it probably are in the fact that his family used to run a small publishing press which put out study guides for the state SSLC exams. Then, as evinced from his sale of Vijay Karnataka for Rs 300 crore, there was good money to be made in the business. Also, don’t discount the fact that newspapers are a wonderful platform for budding politicians. Sankeshwar, after all, was once a BJP Member of Parliament from Dharwad North and is now a Legislative Council member in Bangalore.

Sankeshwar’s tremendous advantage lies in his vast logistics network that he can leverage to reach out to every nook and cranny of the state, ensuring that his newspapers are deposited on the doorsteps of his readers early in the morning. Sankeshwar plans to roll out Vijaya Vani across 10 cities in Karnataka over a period of one year. He has already launched six editions across key cities in the state. He has set up his own printing sites in these locations and will take delivery of five new printing press over the next five months.

It may almost seem like Sankeshwar rued his decision to part with the ground-breaking Vijaya Karnataka. As soon as his lock-in period was over, he was back in business, this time purchasing a 57-year-old district-level tabloid, Vijaya Vani, published from Tumkur, and re-launching it as a state-level broadsheet newspaper on April 1, 2012. He met with opposition almost immediately. The Times group raised an objection to the title, Vijaya Vani, saying it clashed with the one the group had bought from Sankeshwar, namely Vijaya Karnataka, and filed a case in the Bangalore city court.

“The name Vijaya is not their family property. Anybody can have the name Vijaya. It only shows their desperation and they are scared of our aggressive launch. I consider it as an unhealthy practice,” said Sankeshwar in response.

Vijaya Vani may not be the force that its predecessor used to be, but considering Sankeshwar’s track record, it may be a good idea to take his words seriously. After all, his name is not just on those papers, it also means ‘victory.’’

Two Film Censor boards in India; CBFC & Udipi ‘Muth’ !!!

KVSS muddle continues!

State of Karnataka, now has two Censor Boards – CBFC & Muth, the Pontiff Board. The Swamijis who are far away from films and pleasures of this world volunteered  to watch a commercial Kannada movie ‘Katari Veera Sura Sundarangi’(KVSS)  that has got U/A certificate.

Sri Santosh Guruji : This time the senior pontiffs like Sri Vishveswara Thirtha of Pejawar Mut, Sri Balagangadharanatha Swamiji of Adhi Chunchanagiri and Sri Siddaganga Mut Sri Shivakumar Swamiji have asked the juniors to stop at it from this film KVSS.

“For the first time, heads of various mutts have raised voice against a film that depicts Hindu religion and Gods in poor light. Many films that have objectionable dialogues were made in the past. We are warning producers not to make such films in future. Dalits are also Hindus . We cannot overlook the Court order. Yet we have set an alarm bell. Here afterwards any film, film music, bhajans, plays etc should not defame the Hindu gods and goddesses. This time the senior pontiffs like Sri Vishveswara Thirtha of Pejawar Mut, Sri Balagangadharanatha Swamiji of Adhi Chunchanagiri and Sri Siddaganga Mut Sri Shivakumar Swamiji have asked the juniors to stop at it from this film KVSS.”

: said Sri Santosh Guruji as the collective opinion of various religious leaders  &  bodies called “Math” in Karnataka after suggesting more cuts in KVSS in contrary to the court’s order. On the city Civil Court stay order he had nothing to say. We have to obey the court. Court is above the Swamijis he replied. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other organisations had raised objections over some controversial dialogues and scenes in film.

A meeting organised on Thursday evening to amicably solve the controversy surrounding the forthcoming film KVSS ended in an anti-climax. The producer had agreed to remove objectionable scenes, but a court order against its removal was brought to their notice. K Nagaraj, Regional Officer, Central Board for Film Certification, has said that no one can interfere or disturb the screening of a film once it was okayed by the Censor Board. Whether to agree to Swamijis or to Court order is his piquant situation of the producer Munirathna Naidu and distributor Rockline Venkatesh.

On Thursday evening Sri Lakshmivara Thirtha of Shiroor Muth, Sri Bharathi Swamiji of Adhichunchanagiri, Sri Sureshananda Swamiji, Sri Santosh Guruji and other Hindu Association leaders watched the film at Renukamba Digital theatre suggested two cuts and brought some respite for the producer Munirathna Naidu of kVSS the legal hassle has put the producer in the scissors again. While appreciating the producer for effecting six cuts that show Hindu religion and Gods in poor light, Santosh has advised him to remove two more scenes – one criticising Rama and Krishna and the other one where hero kicks Gods.

Producer of Rs.15 crores first high quality 3D film KVSS  Munirathna Naidu despite of high tension he is facing for the film has decided to make another 3D film after all problems get over.

The Dalit Rakshana Vedike has brought a stay order for the film screening without any cuts from the existing censor cuts suggested. That is very clear that Dalit association has not liked the suggestions made by Hindu Swamijis.

On the appeal made by Sri Pejawar Muth Swamiji, Sri Balagangadharanatha Swamiji and Sri Siddaganga Sri Shivakumara Swamiji we have seen the film . Till that time we found two more cuts not made and Munirathna Naidu has agreed to it stated Santosh Guruji.

While the Swamijis watching three fourth of the film KVSS suggested for two more cuts for the film and then release the film on Thursday night the piquant situation for producer Munirathna Naidu and distributor of the film Rockline Venkatesh was the City civil court stay order for showing the film KVSS according to the first censor version. The stay order was brought by Dalit Rakshana Samithi. The fact remains that in some parts of Karnataka ‘KVSS’ is screening the first censor version as it is without cuts. Producer Munirathna Naidu agreed to the call of the Swamijis and making necessary changes consulting the Regional Censor Board. Meanwhile he has to rush to the City Civil Court to Dalit Rakshana Sangha filing a case.

Bengaluru: 872 females to 1k males; Is ‘satyamev jayate’ irrelevant here?

Deepti Rao writes on her blog http://www.binfikr.com: Is Satyamev Jayate Irrelevant to Karnataka?

…Both rural and urban populations of Karnataka must watch such inspiring (Satyameva Jayate‘s) television episodes. Did you know that Bangalore Rural has a glaring sex ratio of 872 females to 1,000 males? Who knows, it could be attributed to the prevalent female feticide practices in rural Bangalore!

…Kannada is the only south-Indian, regional, language that has been left out (telecasting Satyamev Jayate) . Do not blame Satyameva Jayate producers for this mishap – they dubbed the show in Kannada and Suvarna television channel was supposed to air this program starting May 6th! Shockingly, the Karnataka government, especially Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC) and Karnataka Television Association (KTA) prevented the Kannada-dubbed show from being aired!

Taking refuge under an old restriction imposed by the KFCC and KTA, way back in 1960, Karnataka state has banned the dubbing of movies and television serials into Kannada for decades now. The reason being that dubbing would suppress local talent and would also reduce the popularity of Kannada language.

Consequently, a majority of the not conversant population of Karnataka state (accounting for about 2 crore people) might have skipped the last episode of Satyameva Jayate because they did not understand Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, or Bengali languages! It is sad, is it not?

‘Bengaluru’ – formless, even viscous!

Girish Karnad, the winner of the 1998 Bharatiya Jnanpith award,  a playwright, actor, film director, and arts administrator writes in THE DAILY BEAST

It was not so long ago that Bangalore was competing only with Singapore.

It was not so long ago that Bangalore was competing only with Singapore.

…..The current joke is that the only buildings to remain unscathed by the onslaught may be Vidhana Soudha, the building that houses the legislature, and UB City, a complex that is a hideous combination of the Empire State Building and Internet kitsch, built by a liquor baron.

……The emergence in the ’60s of the liquor industry, with its intractable deals and infinitely manipulable accounting, seems an inevitable response to the demands of the new democratic politics. And liquor barons virtually took over the running of the city. They built cinema halls, started newspapers, built schools, opened restaurants, produced films, invested in real estate, and even hosted public parties in honor of politicians. Then in July 1981, tragedy struck. More than 300 died on a single day from drinking illicit liquor, and the aura surrounding alcohol began to pall.

…..That these firms grew without bowing and scraping to the government has caused no little resentment in the Vidhana Soudha. The new IT prosperity has created a young, energetic, educated, and wealthy working class, transforming Bangalore into a consumer’s paradise of shopping malls and office complexes with glass-fronted exteriors. The insatiable demand for “good English” has renewed the anxiety that Kannada may die out in the city. In 2006 Bangalore was renamed Bengaluru.

……But the main loss has been the sense of a stable, coherent city. The experience of the city has become formless, even viscous. Everyone is trying to get somewhere, and distance has become the only real object of daily concern. Instead of shrinking the city, the flyovers, underpasses, and elevated trains seem continually to expand it, pushing people farther and farther away from each other.

Kannada people vs the Kannada film lobby??

The Kannada media industry now wants no movies/shows to be dubbed in Kannada. There are statements and articles by Kannada media personalities protesting against dubbed movies and even TV shows like Aamir Khan‘s Satyameva Jayate. They claim that dubbed movies/shows will eat into their market and strangle the Kannada industry.

It is very easy to raise popular support by claiming it is for the good of Kannada. I’d like to analyse whether such a move would actually benefit the Kannada people or just the pockets of the Kannada film lobby.
The Kannada Film industry through its lobbying over the years enjoys several protectionist measures including subsidies, 100% tax concession, restrictions on the way other language movies release in Karnataka, etc. It is almost an universal law that protected industries always tend to lag in quality, technology and innovation.
Even a Kannada fanatic would be hard pressed to say that better quality movies/entertainment have been produced because of these protectionist regulations. Kannada movies have long stopped entertaining the discerning audience and remain the staple for those cannot access other forms of entertainment. Even an occasional well made movie finds it tough to attract the former due to the morass of bad quality movies it is hidden amongst [every one of them taking a chunk of out of the tax money, mind you].
It shows the declining quality of Kannada movies/shows if people will prefer watching badly lip synced dub versions of other language films and shows. And why should the people of Karnataka not have the option to do so. It is in their interests and rights to gain access to more and better entertainment which their own media industry has failed to satisfy and is always trying to smother.
These protectionist measures supported by a few media gimmicks, goonda tactics against those do not agree and political connections serve only to protect the pockets and interests of the rich dudes who run the industry. They neither benefit the Kannada culture nor the Kannada people. Talibanisation does not benefit anybody except those who preach it.
Deregulating the industry will force the industry players to change and face open competition. Some will go bust but at the same time it will open doors for new players who have the what the audience enjoys.
The release restrictions are being stayed in courts and a recent Supreme Court judgement regarding AP might end the regime of tax concessions. In this age of increasing awareness and increased channels of media consumption, the out-dated barons of the industry face a downward path and are trying to prolong their exit. It is they who are strangling the Kannada media industry. What remains to be seen is, if the Kannada people continue to allow this by actively/passively supporting such short sighted measures and allow the Kannada media industry to roll into the valley of irrelevance. Sandalwood Wars: No show for ‘govindaya namaha’ from May 1!

Sandalwood King Ragvendra Rajkumar and another big kannada producer Suresh are loggerheads over the release of  Punnet Rajkumar starrer Anna Bond in the first week of may. Govindaya Namaha, a box-office (BO) hit from Suresh is doing a whopping business in all territories, is about to be withdrawn from the theaters bowing down to the pressure of Sandalwood.

In the days since the release of Puneet Rajkumar‘s home production was announced, media attention was on an impending clash at the BO with another big Kannada film. But what has also been transpiring is that the Komal-starrer Govindaya Namaha, which has been having a good run at the BO for over four weeks, now has to make way for Puneet’s film, despite continuing to be profitable.

Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) rules stipulate that a movie can be removed from a theatre only if it does not bring in a share for the producer or fails to even recover the rental for the theatre. According to the producer of Govindaya Namaha, Suresh, several theatre’s showing his movie, have arbitrarily decided for a change of cinema. Suresh says:

“I am forced to remove my film from theatres even though it has been doing well. I have been told that cinema owners are bowing to pressure from the distributor of the Puneet-starrer and refusing to play my film anymore. In Gandhinagar, releasing your film at Santosh Theatre is a big deal. My film has been playing there over the past few weeks and I have been getting a share of 4 lakh every week, after all overheads, including theatre rental, are taken care of.”

Kannada’s “Goobe” notebooks, folders, earrings and crochet products !!!

Goobe's Book Republic, Bengaluru

What prompted this post?.. my friend who doesn’t know a word of Kannada cursing her slow internet connection thus –“ hey this goobe gmail is troubling me so much” :D

This WORD deserved a post completely dedicated to it.. the word is GOOBE, which in Kannada means owl.
In our day to day life we don’t really talk much about owl’s do we? But goobe is quite often used as swear word, to express your displeasure at someone or something . Similar to calling somebody a monkey or a donkey but goobe is easier and much cuter than those words.

One of the Kannada’s  popular slang terms has even made its way to Chennai, where it is used with other Kannada words like bejaar. The usage of the word seems to be increasing with the advent of text messages and Facebook. Several bloggers dedicate entire posts to the word goobe.

In fact, the word is so popular that it even sells as a brand name. Gurpreet Kaur, who has just finished her II PU from Christ Junior College and her best friend, Varsha Ramesh, who graduated from Kumarans, (both in Banglaore)  used the word to poke fun at each other and they grew so fond of it that they decided to name their business enterprise after it. “We just love the word,” says Gurpreet, “And we love owls. “Since October 2011, the girls have been selling Goobe notebooks, folders, earrings and crochet products through the social media network.

Goobe’s Book Republic, Banglaore:  Goobe’s book republic sounds funny if kannadigas read it. For non Kannadigas, it means owl its right there very obvious in the logo. But i really like the name and the style of it.This is a small library with vast collection of books on Churchstreet, MG Road, Bangalore.

It’s interesting to note that while the English language regards the owl as a symbol of wisdom (He is as wise as an owl, we often read in English texts) probably because of its association with Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, its usage in Kannada and Hindi is quite derogatory. In Finnish culture, the owl is regarded as stupid for its dumb stare, while owls in medieval Europe were thought to be evil, stupid helpers of witches.

What’s the good word?

» ‘Goobe in Kannada actually means ‘owl’.
But in Bangalore it means:

» A fool

» A boring person

» An introvert

» An irritating guy

» A useless person

‘Goobe is casually used when:

» A friend makes everyone wait by turning up late at any place outside college

» Someone is not paying attention to what you are saying

» You are angry with someone who has failed to complete the task assigned to him/her

» A friend keeps his phone busy by chatting with his girlfriend/ boyfriend

» You bump into the lecturer you wanted to avoid

» You have to curse the traffic cop who steps forward to stop you.

» You have to curse the lappy (laptop) when it conks

In traditional Kannadiga homes, mothers warn their children against disobedience by telling them, “Goobe barathe!” (The owl will come!) Owls are looked upon as a bad omen because they haunt lonely places and are only seen at night.
